ApolloCDL: The Same Platform, Pointed at Truck-Driving Schools

A truck-driving school runs on the same bones as a nursing program or a welding academy: short, clock-hour, outcome-driven, with a student record that has to carry someone from an inquiry to a job. So we did not build a second product for it. ApolloCDL is ApolloSRM with a vertical switch flipped, the CDL toolset turned on, and the vocabulary changed to the words a carrier school actually uses. What changes is the compliance spine and the way graduates get hired, and those are exactly the parts we built out.

How is a CDL school different from a career college?

Two things, mostly. The regulator is the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, not the Department of Education, so the marquee compliance surface is Entry-Level Driver Training and the Training Provider Registry rather than the Title IV files. And the money looks different: many drivers are paid for by a workforce board voucher, a trucking carrier that sponsors the training, or the VA, rather than by federal student aid. Everything else, the clock hours, the attendance that feeds them, the ledger, admissions, placement, is the same machinery a career college already runs on. That is why a CDL school gets a mature system of record on day one instead of a version-one product.

What does ApolloCDL do about ELDT and the TPR?

The federal ELDT curriculum is fixed in regulation. Class A has thirty-one theory topics across five units, plus the behind-the-wheel range and road maneuvers, and a school delivers and attests to them rather than inventing them. ApolloCDL tracks each topic per student, marked off by the instructor, and shows a live verdict once theory and behind-the-wheel are both complete. Then it builds the Training Provider Registry completion certification to spec. Here is the honest part: it does not transmit that file to FMCSA for you, and it never invents a driver license number or a provider id. A missing field is flagged, not filled in with a guess. That is the same posture we take with the federal aid files on the career-college side, and it is the only posture that survives an audit.

What is the Driver Qualification File?

It is the thing a career college never has to think about. Before a student can train and test, a CDL school needs to know they hold a valid permit or license, carry a current DOT medical certificate, come back clear from the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, and have an acceptable motor vehicle record. ApolloCDL keeps those four facts on one record and rolls them into a plain verdict: eligible, pending, or ineligible, with the specific missing or expired item named. Every one of those facts is entered from its source, the medical examiner, the Clearinghouse portal, the state DMV. We never fabricate a safety record, and the eligibility verdict is computed from what is on file, not stored as an opinion.

Do we have to use federal financial aid?

No, and this was a deliberate design decision. CDL schools are funded every way but the same way. The ApolloCDL preset ships funding-agnostic, so each school picks its own mix: Title IV and Workforce Pell if it participates, or WIOA vouchers, carrier sponsorship with tuition reimbursement, VA benefits, and cash if it does not. Third-party funders are first-class payers. You record a funder authorization, invoice the funder, and when their payment arrives you post it to the student ledger like any other credit, with the same care around money that the rest of the platform uses, so a double-click can never double-credit an account.

How does it schedule behind-the-wheel training?

Around real equipment, and without double-booking it. Tractors, trailers, and yards are tracked resources. A range or road session reserves a truck, a yard, and an instructor for a window, capped at the number of students who can ride along. If the truck or the instructor is already busy during that window, the scheduler refuses the booking and tells you what clashed. Two sessions never end up fighting over the same tractor, which is the kind of small, boring reliability that decides whether a training day actually happens.

What about getting drivers hired?

Placement is the whole point of a CDL school, and carriers often commit to a driver before graduation. ApolloCDL records those pre-hire agreements with the pay, the sign-on bonus, and the service commitment, and it keeps a verified hire as the outcome that actually counts, on the same record as the training that produced it. The outcome a carrier school lives on stops being a spreadsheet someone rebuilds every quarter and becomes a receipt.

Can a school run ApolloCDL without Title IV?
